# Zendesk review

**Grade C+ (69/100) · #11 of 12 help desks**

Omnichannel help desk with email, messaging, voice and AI agents billed per automated resolution.

> Zendesk retires AI agents - Essential, the legacy bot builder and autoreplies with articles on December 10, 2026, so older bots must move to the current AI agents [2].

## Verdict
Zendesk suits mid-size and large support teams that want email, chat, voice and AI agents in one mature suite with a deep app marketplace. The catch is a stacking bill: SLAs, skills-based routing and the $50 Copilot need Suite Professional or higher, and every AI resolution past a small allowance is metered.

**Good fit:** Support teams of 10 or more agents running email, chat and voice in one place; Companies that need a large app marketplace and enterprise compliance options; Teams ready to pay per resolution for AI agents that take actions

**Look elsewhere:** Small teams on a tight budget that need SLAs or skills-based routing; Buyers who want a fixed, predictable AI bill; Teams that want agent assist on the entry Suite plan

## Pros
- AI agents work on messaging, email and voice, and can take actions in connected systems such as order lookups and address changes [2][5].
- Every Suite and Support plan includes AI agents, with 5 to 10 automated resolutions per agent a month built in [1].
- Voice, WhatsApp and messaging come with Suite Team, so no separate phone product is needed [1].
- A long compliance list: SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 42001, FedRAMP Low and a HIPAA BAA option [7].
- A large ecosystem of 1,000+ prebuilt apps and integrations [1].

## Cons
- SLAs and skills-based routing are missing from Suite Team and start at Suite Professional, $115 per agent a month [1].
- Copilot costs $50 per agent a month on top, paid yearly only, and only from Suite Professional [1].
- Automated resolutions past the allowance cost $1.50 committed or $2.00 pay as you go, and overage is billed monthly [1][3].
- The help center states the AI allowance in dollars per seat ($2 on Team plans), which does not match the resolution counts on the pricing page [1][3].
- Zendesk trains its generic cross-account machine learning models on Service Data [7].

## Grade breakdown
| Criterion | Weight | Level | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| True cost with AI on | 30% | 1/5 | $2,250 a month for 10 agents on Suite Professional with AI on, or $225 per agent [1]. |
| Price transparency | 15% | 4/5 | Plans and AI prices are public, but Copilot has annual-only billing and the help center states the AI allowance in dollars rather than resolutions [1][3]. |
| AI agent and assist | 20% | 5/5 | AI agents take actions on chat, email and voice, with Copilot for agents, a test widget that simulates conversations before launch, and analytics on automated resolutions [2][5][6]. |
| Help desk essentials | 15% | 5/5 | Email, live chat, help centers, SLAs and automations, plus native voice and WhatsApp, skills-based routing and 1,000+ prebuilt apps [1]. |
| Security and data | 10% | 4/5 | SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001, plus EU hosting and a HIPAA BAA, but Zendesk trains generic cross-account models on Service Data [7]. |
| What users say | 10% | 4/5 | An average of 4.3 from 7,095 G2 reviews and 4.4 from 4,090 Capterra reviews [11][12]. |

## What Zendesk is
Zendesk is one of the most established help desks, built around tickets that pull together email, messaging, live chat and voice. Suite Team, at $55 per agent a month billed annually, covers those channels plus AI agents, while SLAs, skills-based routing and up to five help centers start at Suite Professional [1].

In March 2026 Zendesk completed its purchase of Forethought, adding AI agents for chat, email and voice that also run on other platforms [10]. Older bot tools, including AI agents - Essential and the bot builder, stop working on December 10, 2026 [2].

## AI
Zendesk AI agents come with every Suite and Support plan. They answer on messaging, email and voice, follow procedures and take actions in connected systems, such as looking up an order or changing a shipping address [2][5]. A test widget lets admins chat with the agent before launch, and analytics track automated resolutions [2][6].

Billing is per automated resolution. Since May 18, 2026, only Verified resolutions, checked by a language model, draw down the allowance [4]. The pricing page includes 5 resolutions per agent a month on Suite Team and 10 on Suite Professional, then charges $1.50 per resolution committed or $2.00 pay as you go [1]. Copilot, the agent assist layer, is a separate $50 per agent a month, paid yearly and sold only from Suite Professional [1].

## Pricing
A 10-agent team that wants both AI agents and Copilot needs Suite Professional: $1,150 a month in seats, $500 for Copilot, and $600 for the 400 resolutions past the allowance at the committed rate, for $2,250 a month [1]. Suite Team runs AI agents for less, $1,225 a month for the same team, but cannot add Copilot [1]. Overage is billed monthly whatever your contract term, and you can pause AI agents instead of paying it [3].

## Security and data
Zendesk holds SOC 2 Type II, ISO 27001, ISO 27018 and ISO 42001, and is FedRAMP authorized at the Low level [7]. Data sits in US, EEA or Asia Pacific data centers, with region choice through the Data Center Location add-on, and a HIPAA BAA requires the Advanced Compliance add-on [7]. Third-party LLM providers may not train on customer data, but Zendesk does use Service Data to train its generic cross-account models [7]. AI sub-processors include OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, Groq and ElevenLabs [8].

## What users say
Zendesk averages 4.3 out of 5 from about 7,000 G2 reviews, 4.4 from 4,094 on Capterra and 4.4 from 953 ratings on Gartner Peer Insights [11][12][13]. G2's own review analysis says setup gets complex for advanced workflows and that smaller teams raise price concerns on higher tiers [14]. Public AI stories include Hello Sugar, TeamSystem, Babbel and Action Property Management [5].
